Invitation to express interest in SEMLI Physiotherapy Clinical Services:

Dear colleague,

The University of Pretoria has identified Sport, Exercise Medicine and Lifestyle Interventions for Chronic Disease as one of its four main strategic niche areas for research activity in the next decade.  To realise this strategic goal the SEMLI (Sport, Exercise Medicine and Lifestyle Institute) was established in June 2015, under the directorship of Professor Martin Schwellnus.  The vision of the SEMLI is to be an international leader in scientific research that promotes health and well-being in the population through lifestyle interventions, reduces exercise-related injuries and medical complications, and promotes sporting excellence on a platform characterised by world class education, service delivery and the use of modern technology.

A clinical services, research and teaching platform is being developed within the SEMLI on the LC de Villiers Sports Campus utilising existing infrastructure and developing new infrastructure. This platform will include clinical services in the areas of sport and exercise medicine, orthopaedics, radiology, physiotherapy, biokinetics, sports nutrition, sports psychology, sports science, biomechanics, and others. These clinical services will be accessible to UP staff and students, students at the TuksSport School, members of the public, and visiting national and international athletes.

The SEMLI Sports Physiotherapy clinical service will be provided through a registered physiotherapy practice under the directorship of UP academic staff members in the Physiotherapy department.  This practice would like to provide the opportunity for private sports physiotherapists that are also committed to research and teaching, to consult on a sessional basis at the SEMLI Sports Physiotherapy Practice.  In so doing, we hope to create a partnership that takes advantage of a multi-disciplinary environment to advance research, teaching and clinical excellence in the field of Sport Physiotherapy.

Some opportunities this creates for any private practitioners that are interested in being involved include:

  • Being part of a multi-disciplinary clinical environment
  • Being part of a clinical research group, to conduct research, present at conferences and co-author original research manuscripts
  • Having access to sophisticated (and often costly) diagnostic and other equipment that may otherwise not be possible within a private practice
  • Having an opportunity to obtain CPD points through academic meetings, authoring papers and teaching engagements

If you are interested in being involved in this exciting initiative, please reply to Dr Elzette Korkie by email (, so that we may arrange for more detailed discussions with you around the opportunities that may exist.

We look forward to hearing from you.
